Am I subverting the purpose of this posting area? Anyway, I'd like to continue to share information about Kalamazoo's excellent, writer-friendly, locally-owned bookstore, Kazoo Books:
... Jim Tiller, the co-owner of Kazoo Books, recently passed away, but Gloria Tiller, his wife and the founder, has now completed moving all operations to the Parkview Avenue location. It's easy to find via 131: off at the Oakland Drive exit, north to Parkview Avenue, west a few blocks to Kazoo Books, on the left. Park behind the store on Book Alley.
... Well! Yesterday (Sat., Oct. 1) Gloria hosted an in-your-dreams writerly event. Bonnie Jo Campbell ("Mothers, Tell Your Daughters") and Andy Mozina ("Contrary Motion"), two of Kalamazoo's most prominent authors, read from their books and answered questions and made several other writers in the crowd feel so privileged to be there. I, personally, went home afterward and wrote for six happy hours, and I usually take Saturdays off. A topic that both Bonnie Jo and Andy discussed was the relative merits of present tense or past tense in fiction writing. (Andy's "Contrary Motion" is entirely in present.) What a wonderful day!
