The holidays and year-end work projects can really drag a writer down and muddle our priorities. It's time to take a step back and get back to our roots, with books. All great writers are prolific readers but even the best need a kick in the butt. Can you challenge yourself to read at least 52 books in 2016? There's no prizes, except for a once weekly excuse to shut out the world and find some inspiration.
To participate, create a book list. I've started mine on Goodreads (see below) but you can use your blog, a Facebook post, a shared document - whatever works! You can even not share and just participate from the shadows, like a book bogeyman.
Unsure of what to read? Start with something you know and love, to get comfortable, then branch out. Do you have a stack of books from Christmas that you haven't read yet? Knock 'em out, one week at a time. Any book counts, so brush up on your technical knowledge for work. Lastly, edge out of your genre-based safe-zone, and try something you've never experienced before. At the end of each month, when your brain is stuffed full of new knowledge and new ideas, reward yourself with a hot beverage and one of the old standbys.
